MY BERKLEE EXPERIENCE

newsize berklee

A few months ago I said goodbye to SA for the winter and embarked on a once in a lifetime adventure to the Berklee College of Music in Boston USA. 1200 selected students from 75 countries came together for the awe-inspiring but intense Summer Performance Program that runs for July and August. It’s an amazing place consisting of 9 multiple storey buildings and a seemingly endless stream of rehearsal rooms, practice rooms and studios. The lecturers at Berklee teach with a passion and flare that I have never encountered before. Staying after hours to jam with students is considered a “perk of the job” and they make themselves available 24/7. The level of musicianship of students attending this program is extremely high. It was so good to be in an environment where, not only is everyone serious about their music, but everyone is interacting with each other all the time and, more importantly, learning constantly from one another.

All of the students perform during the last week. There are approximately 350 bands performing all over the campus.

Apart from the 350 bands are the Berklee All Star bands. There are 3 bands and these are the highest level bands at Berklee. I auditioned along with 160 other keyboardists and was fortunate enough to be selected for the slot I wanted as the keyboardist for the Berklee All Stars Rock ensemble. This was undoubtedly the highlight as we performed in the Berklee Performance Center and opened the Gala Concert. It felt great to be playing on the same stage as all the ex-Berklee students like Sting, John Mayer etc.

Because the schedule is extremely hectic (6 months of work in 2 months) I didn’t have much time available to spend exploring Boston in detail but I can say that it’s definitely a place that must be visited. It’s breathtakingly beautiful and hosts such an amazing energy as the educational capital of the world. Just down the street from Berklee you have MIT, Harvard and the New England Conservatory of Music. Boston has more universities than any other city in the world.

All in all it was one hell of ride and one I would definitely take again and again. I learnt more in those two months than I have in the last 10 years – it’s just a completely different class and I encourage anyone who is serious about being the best musician they can be to go to Berklee. It will change your outlook and approach to music forever.
